FAQ

Question:
How do I set my preferences to receive ALERTS only and not UPDATES?

Answer:

Log to your account, and select "edit". On the "preferences" window, uncheck the "Update" box in the "Message Type Requested" area.

Question:

Your Email address: How can I send you my questions or appreciation for the service that you provide?
Answer:

The email is listed at the end of this page. To prevent spam, it appears on as a "picture" - please type it in your email client.

Question:
How do I register my cellphone to receive alerts?
Answer:
You can register your cellphone and receive text messages. Your account with your carrier states how many free messages you have and how much would a message cost you - this would be your cost.
To register, you have to find your phone email access from the table below or from your provider web-site. This would be the email account that you register - messages sent to this email address will appear on the cell phone as text messages.
Each cell phone has an email address in the format of phone number@something.extension or similar. You can replace the 1234567890 below with your cellphone number for the relevant carrier. Remember to select "Headline" type of message in the preference box.

Question: Blackberry problem: I registered my Blackberry and within seconds I received the confirmation E-Mail with a subject of edis-by-email.net Activation Code. The problem was that there was no text in the received message. A little hard to follow the activation instructions when there are none.
Answer: Blackberry sometimes strips the contents of email which is labeled both for text and html. We have changed our messages so the message types:? "Full Text email" and "Headline for cellphone" are text only and it should pass.

Question:
Problem with registration: I registered with edis-by-email.net and am not getting alerts. When I attempt to log in, the password is not accepted. Also, when I attempt to recover the password, the system says that the email address is not registered.
Answer:
We apologize for the problem. We checked the system and could not find your email listed in. It could happen as the confirmation email with the activation code did not reach you and the account was not activated. The system deletes unconfirmed registration after 72 hours.
We suggest to register again, and if you do not receive the confirmation code within a few minutes check you "spam" or "bulk" email as your email program might have assumed that this is spam. If this does not help, please email the address below immediately. We can activate the account for you but still you may not receive the messages as non-reception of the code indicates reception limitations.
By the way - your email was in our BULK directory and fortunately I saw it before deleting the spam messages!

Question: Problem with registration: I tried to create an account but my system discarded the email with my activation code as spam. I've instructed it to accept future email from sender:postmaster domain: edis-by-email. dot net, but I don't see any way to get another activation code email. Can you help?
Answer: To receive again the activation code, go to www.edis-by-email.net and log-on with the correct user name and type something for a password and submit it, and the system will send you the code again.
Spam filters need to be set to receive emails from the edis-by-email.net domain.

Question: Problem with registration: The system does not allow me to use my name "JOHN D." - when click on add email, get invalid 1st name, can't click on continue.
Answer: Please try again, and if it does not work out use just a single first name.

Question:
Wrong formating of email message: I received a text message without the regular formatting - headings have disappeared
Answer:
This message had an issue with the heading and was wrongly sent in this text format - we added a header correction algorithm to prevent it from happening again.

Question: Received message for wrong area: I received a message for area that is not included in my filter. Answer: This can happen due to a small intersection between the area defined for your selections and the area defined by the alert provider. Question: Receiving double messages: I am recieving the same alert again and again. How can it be prevented?
Answer: Currently, the weather alert are getting into the feed (edis.oes.ca.gov) broken into areas that do not match California's counties, and a few could be to a portion of the specific selection of the subscriber. We are working on improving the alert posting mechanism and hope to implement a solution by mid July.

Question:
Can I receive text only? Is there a text only version of the wonderful edis by email service? My email program has trouble formatting the fancy message format that is sent with logos and such and it looks horrible, plus is hard to read. Any chance of a basic text one for those of us who value content over eye-candy? :)
Answer:
The following three options were added:
    • "Desktop email" message which is what we have now,
    • "Text Message email" which includes the full information in text format and
    • "Headline for cellphone" which includes only the headline of the original message.
The last one might be useful for pager subscribers, but be careful as it is very partial and includes very little information about the area, time, etc. so the subscriber needs to select limited area of concern.

Question: Better Area Targeting: Can I subscribe to a smaller area of concern, such as a specific city, so the I will receive only alerts that concern me directly?
Answer: As a default, every California county is one area unit in EDIS. Better area targeting can be done if your city or county opt for expanded services from Hormann America. See for example the Contra Costa County selection.

Question: AREA in the SUBJECT line: I would only suggest that the AREA covered by the message be included in the subject line for sorting purposes.
Answer: The area list is too long to be included in the subject line.
